Nature

Nature, in the broadest sense, is equivalent to the natural world, physical world, or material world. "Nature" refers to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. It ranges in scale from the subatomic to the cosmic.
Earth (or, "the earth") is the only planet presently known to support life, and as such, its natural features are the subject of many fields of scientific research. Within the solar system, it is third nearest to the sun; it is the largest terrestrial planet and the fifth largest overall. Its most prominent climatic features are its two large polar regions, two relatively narrow temperate zones, and a wide equatorial tropical to subtropical region. Precipitation varies widely with location, from several metres of water per year to less than a millimetre. Seventy-one percent of the Earth's surface is covered by salt-water oceans. The remainder consists of continents and islands, with most of the inhabited land in the Northern Hemisphere.

The atmosphere of the Earth serves as a key factor in sustaining the planetary ecosystem. The thin layer of gases that envelops the Earth is held in place by the planet's gravity. Dry air consists of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon and other inert gases, carbon dioxide, etc.; but air also contains a variable amount of water vapour. The atmospheric pressure declines steadily with altitude, and has a scale height of about 8 kilometres at the Earth's surface: the height at which the atmospheric pressure has declined. The ozone layer of the Earth's atmosphere plays an important role in depleting the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reaches the surface. As DNA is readily damaged by UV light, this serves to protect life at the surface. The atmosphere also retains heat during the night, thereby reducing the daily temperature extremes.

Oceans, rivers, lakes are included in this planet, too. Ocean is a major body of saline water, and a principal component of the hydrosphere. Approximately 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by ocean, a continuous body of water that is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas. More than half of this area is over 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) deep. A lake is a terrain feature a body of liquid on the surface of a world that is localized to the bottom of basin and moves slowly if it moves at all. On Earth, a body of water is considered a lake when it is inland, not part of the ocean, is larger and deeper than a pond, and is fed by a river. A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing toward an ocean, a lake, a sea or another river. In a few cases, a river simply flows into the ground or dries up completely before reaching another body of water. Small rivers may also be called by several other names, including stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill; there is no general rule that defines what can be called a river.

Animals are a major group of this beautiful planet. There are a lot of animals on Earth distinguished into categories like mammals, fish, amphibians etc. All these animals need food, water, fresh air (oxygen) and their own space to live. The biggest numbers of wild animals live in Africa and around the Amazon.

In this planet we live, as well. Humans are the smartest bodies which have ever lived on this planet. We started our life here many years ago and we still exist. However, humans do not always care for the environment as they should. People tend to prefer their own convenience and luxury over a healthy natural environment. People want more cars, bigger houses, the latest computer technology, and packaged foods, etc. to make their life more comfortable.

The most serious ecologic
al problems of today are the pollution of air, water and soil, the destruction of the global ecosystem, the extinction of many species of animals and plants, the weather changes, acid rain, global warming of the Earth’s surface, the destruction of tropical rain forests and the hole in the ozone layer. These damages are caused by us, people, and our technical progress. Factories, power stations and motor vehicles pump large quantities of carbon dioxide and other waste gases into the air. Some poisonous gases dissolve in the water and in the atmosphere and then fall to the earth in the form of acid rain. Acid rain damages trees, buildings and kills fish. Rivers can also be polluted by industrial waste from factories and chemical fertilizers and pesticides used by farmers. Global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. Normally, heat from the sun warms the earth and escapes back into space. But carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere trap the sun’s heat, and this is slowly making the earth warmer.

The ozone layer is a layer of gas high above the surface of the earth that helps to protect it from the sun ultraviolet radiation. Scientists have recently discovered holes in the ozone layer, caused by substances called CFCs. CFCs are used in refrigerators, aerosol cans and in the manufacture of some pla
stic products. Now, don’t use these any such products, unless they are marked as “ozone-friendly”.

Rainforests help to control global warming because they absorb carbon dioxide. In recent years, large areas have been destroyed for wood or for farming. Many rainforests grow on poor soils, and when they are cut down or burned, the area may turn to desert. Many plant and animal species t
hat live there could become extinct.

People should use alternative fo
rms of energy. Electricity produced by solar, wind or water power doesn’t damage environment like the electricity made of coal, gas or oil. But solar, wind or water power is still too expensive. People should recycle and reuse, when used objects and materials can be used again.

When Teens Make Wrong Choices...

Teens have a lot of free time… Indeed… But, society should show interest thereat, how children spend their free time. Too many children and adolescents spend free time outside on the streets without control, without the interest of the parents. It’s too many possible places, where teens may spend their playtime. It can be home, school, clubbable institutions and some organizations: schools clubs, centres for free time or houses for youth. Unfortunately, in the puberty some age groups arise, that have huge impact on the behaviour of teens. They want to try a lot of new things in this age, mainly things they are excluded from. “Forbidden fruit tastes the best!” They want to belong to some groups. It starts with the first cigarette, a glass of alcohol, drugs and in some cases these “blameless fun or deeds of adulthood” end in death…

There are not yet known any psychological mechanisms why smoking is attractive for a young person. It is clear why it is so difficult to stop, after you have established the habit, or rather the dependency. In fact, smoking stimulates within the brain similar to those typical of the drugs more "classic" as morphine and heroin. And give up the cigarette triggers real withdrawal symptoms: craving for tobacco, irritability, anxiety, frustration, anger, difficulty concentrating, decreased heart rate.

The drug problem is even changing and growing. Drugs that were for more years ago have given way to cocaine, ecstasy, hashish etc. Moreover, the phenomenon of drug use is increasing and involves growing number of young boys. The social system tries to the best it can to address youth problems. The best intentions are often turned into blind political camp aigns. On one hand it is clear that prohibiting the use of drugs does not solve the problem at all. Also, another example, preventing alcohol from being sold in a club would lead to see young people get to parks with plastic bags containing bottles of liquor purchased elsewhere…

"Alcohol is better than drugs", many parents say. But in fact, alcohol has all the adverse effects of a drug, especially in high doses and high vulnerability of the brain in an age, that is adolescence… There is also growing a very insidious phenomenon: the compulsive drinking on Saturday night! A dangerous and sad passion… Moreover, alcohol use is a leading factor for the three main causes of death among youth: accidental injuries (including motor vehicle crashes and drownings), suicides; and homicides. Alcohol also puts you at greater risk in sex, since you may have more than that you had planned on- an STD (sexually transmitted disease) or an unwanted pregnancy!

It’s also curiosity to blame for… Sometimes really silly, sometimes very misleading… That curiosity that makes kids ask many questions, we say so many "why", waiting for mum and dad to answer, while we remain excited and satisfied. That curiosity that teenagers can not express with words, to which the simple answer is not enough. There is need for contact, experiences, to try, everything the hard way…

Mont Saint Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel and its abbey on the border between Normandy and Brittany, is one of the most famous sites in UNESCO World Heritage listing.

At the foot of the abbey stands the village with its fortified enclosure - built on sand! The abbey is built around the granite apex of the Mount. The ‘Wonder' (13th century) is a masterpiece of monastic architecture with two sets of buildings on three levels of the slope. The entire bay, with the strongest tides in Europe, lies spread out around your feet from the abbey.

Saint Ceneri

St-Ceneri-le-Gerei is found in the Orne department of Normandy to the south-west of Alencon.

A very pretty village in a lovely wooded setting on a bend in the River Sarthe in the heart of southern Normandy, Saint Ceneri is classified as a 'most beautiful village of France'. The village is very popular with artists, drawn by the unspoiled character of the village and several artists have established galleries and workshops here.

There are some pretty houses along the river banks - the two banks are joined by an old bridge.

The village has an attractive 11th century romanesque style church, with some notable frescoes, and pretty views down the river valley. There is a very little 15th century chapel on the other side of the river. Nearby the Gardens at La Mansoniere are also recommended, with several different 'garden rooms' to be explored.

Alençon

Alençon is a commune in Normandy, France, with 52,000 people, capital of the Orne department. It is situated 169 km west of Paris. Alençon belongs to the intercommunality of Alençon (with 52,000 people). Alençon is located in the Orne department, towards the south of the Normandy region and north of Le Mans.

An important town in the 10th-11th centuries, Alencon is best known as an important centre for lace production. Alençon Lace was the most expensive lace in the world! It was light and airy, yet durable. Although the industry is not very active nowadays the story is recounted in the town's 'museum of fine arts and lacemaking'.

The attractive centre of the town features a historical section with some interesting half-timbered and ornate stone buildings lining the streets, and numerous small architectural highlights, and is very enjoyable to explore. The part of the town on the Sarthe river is also attractive. There is also a good selection of cafes and restaurants.

In Alencon the highlights include:
  • the 19th century circular wheat hall
  • the 15th century castle - it is mostly the castle towers that now remain, and part of the walls (the Chateau des Ducs), forming an impressive entranceway
  • the impressive 18th century town hall with its tower.
  • the Church of Notre-Dame
  • the town hall also has an attractive well-maintained garden, and there are various other pretty parks and gardens scattered around the town, along with fountains etc
