Il presidente Stella: “Attraverso The Voice of Teen 240 ragazzi hanno vissuto l’Europa”

Emo

The ‘Emo’ is a well-known teenage subculture which originated in the U.K. in the 1980s.
It spread all over the world and in Greece it reached the peak of its popularity in 2008, when 20% of teenagers were ‘Emo’. You can tell the fans of the ‘Emo’ trend by their eccentric looks.
They dress in black or otherwise dark coloured clothes and wear black eyeliner, mascara and dark eye shadows – both boys and girls alike. Their hairstyle is extreme; a long fringe covers their eyes almost completely.
Because of their strange looks they often fall prey to fans of other teenage subcultures, like the ‘kangaroos’, for instance, who chase the ‘Emo’ to cut off their fringe.
There are also the colourful ‘Emo’, who wear colourful clothes. As the name of this trend suggests, the ‘Emo’ are emotional and sensitive. They believe that life is too hard and no one can understand their teenage sensitivity. Most of them claim that they wish they had never been born. There is no meaning in living the life of adults, nor that of other teenagers who are not ‘Emo’. Their favourite kind of music is gothic and new wave.

Trendy

Nowadays, adolescents belong to different groups or subcultures otherwise. One of these subcultures is called the ‘trendy’. What differentiates them is their appearance.

Required accessories are the sunglasses that are not used as protection from the sun but for to be in style (the larger the better). In their hands they wear colored bracelets and their hair is "inflated" or "nylon" and decorated with colorful ribbons.

They wear stuck jeans called “pipes”, ‘converse all star’ shoes with ribbons and colorful and expensive shirts. They believe that life is about expensive brand clothes. Their main hobby is shopping and hanging out in shopping malls and ‘trendy’ cafes.

Skinheads

A skinhead is a member of a subculture that originated among working class youths in the United Kingdom in the 1960s, and then spread to other parts of the world. Named for their close-cropped or shaven heads, the first skinheads were greatly influenced by West Indian (specifically Jamaican) rude boys and British mods, in terms of fashion, music and lifestyle. Originally, the skinhead subculture was primarily based on those elements, not politics or race. Since then, however, attitudes toward race and politics have become factors in which some skinheads align themselves.

The political spectrum within the skinhead scene ranges from the far right (conservatism, against immigrants and globalization) to the far left (anti-Nazi, anti-racist, pro working class), although many skinheads are apolitical.

Fashion-wise, skinheads range from a clean-cut 1960s mod-influenced style to less-strict punk- and hardcore-influenced styles.
The skinhead subculture was originally associated with music genres such as soul, ska, rocksteady and early reggae. During this time, some reggae lyrics featured themes of black liberation and awareness, something that white skinheads could not relate to. This shift in reggae's lyrical themes created some tension between black and white skinheads, who otherwise got along fairly well.

Winter in Latvia and Greece

Currently it is winter in Latvia and Greece. Since Latvia and Greece are countries with different climate, for that reason the perception about cold is different.

This year the winter in Latvia is particulary cold and sterm, but on the other hand it has presented us with wonderful natural landscapes. The average temperature in this winter is about 15 degrees below zero. As it is every winter, inhabitants of Latvia spend their weekend on a hill skiing or snowboarding, however this year these activities have acquired bigger popularity. Also in our city Aizpute you can enjoy different winter activities as well – sleeding, skating and hockey.

Winter in Greece is considered a very special period of the year. The average temperature this winter in Greece is 4 degrees above zero. Altough, in Greece it snows rarely, when it is snowing, inhabitants of Greece enjoy it fully. When it is snowing, they gather outside and enjoy the snow by playing. Even adults are involved in these snow games. Despite the cold, they do the same things which people do in other European coutries in winter. There are some skiing centres near Athens, such as Parnassos and Kalavrita. They often visit the city centre, which is adorned with decorative trees and lights. The view is pretty spectacular...

Although the climate in Latvia and Greece is different, people in both countries enjoy the gifts what winter us gives – the beautiful nature and cheerful activities. This season helps us remember the childhood...

Hooligans

HOOLIGANS

The hooligans are usually people who have drooped out of, or failed in school, or who are unemployed. We would like to add that hooligans are fanatics who destroy property and do not feel they belong in society.
This can lead to destructive behaviour. They think, that breaking, destroying public property gives them power, but they are wrong. Furthermore, they hide their face by wearing starts and their clothes reflect their preference.
They may have strange haircuts or wearing strange earrings or they have strange tattoos. Their habits are to act as a team and to attack and destroy. The majority of new hooligans are extremist belonging to neo-Nazi’s groups.

Hollywood

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, situatedDue to its fame and cultural identity as the historical centre of movie studios and movie stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonymy of American cinema. The nickname Tinsel town refers to the glittering, superficial nature of Hollywood and the movie industry. Today, much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as the Westside neighbourhood, but significant auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects, props, post-production and lighting companies, remain in Hollywood, as does the back lot of Paramount Pictures.

Many historic Hollywood theatres are used as venues and concert stages to premiere major theatrical releases and host the Academy Awards. It is a popular destination for nightlife, tourism, and is home to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The name Hollywood was coined by H. J. Whitley, the Father of Hollywood. He came up with the name while honeymooning with his wife, Gigi in 1886, according to Margaret Virginia Whitley’s memoir. Whitley arranged to buy the 500 acre E.C. Hurd ranch and disclosed to him his plans for the land. They agreed on a price and Hurd agreed to sell at a later date. Whitley did much to promote the area, including bringing electricity and building a bank, as well as a road into the Cahuenga Pass gateway to the San Fernando Valley. Whitley's land was centred on Highland Avenue. In 1904, a new trolley car track running from Los Angeles to Hollywood up Prospect Avenue was opened. The system was called "the Hollywood Boulevard". It cut travel time to and from Los Angeles drastically.

Nowadays Hollywood is the most famous destination for all the ambitious actors from all over the world. In addition Hollywood produces the most successful films and is the area, where live the entire world famous actors, directors and film producers.

Cyber freaks

What are the cyber freaks?

The term “cyber freaks” is used to describe people who spend too much time online. In many cases this can lead to computer addiction, which is computer or Internet overuse that interferes with daily life. This kind of addiction is compared with drug and alcohol addiction. “Cyber freaks” are mainly kids and teenagers.

Habits and characteristics

It is quite common to stay awake during the night in order to play games or chat. Their life is totally connected with internet activities. Social networking, chatting and gaming are prime examples of online activities. Cyber freaks don’t have other hobbies or interests like sports or music. Moreover they spend all their spare time staying at home and they don’t meet their friends, if they have any. Generally they aren’t very sociable.

Causes

There are various reasons for someone to become addicted. The main reason is the technology development that leads to the amelioration of internet applications. So they start playing but they cannot stop. From a psychological viewpoint, teenagers who have low self confidence, are depressed, alone and are not members of teams, are more likely to be addicted to cyber activities.

Effects

Students spend most of their time on cyber activities, which may distract them from homework and cause problems in their academic progress and skills. Also teenagers may become unsociable and violent.

Τι είναι οι Cyber freaks;
