Matera is a town in the region of Basilicata, in the south of Italy. It lies athwart a small canyon, which has been eroded in the course of years by a small stream, the Gravina. Apart from an economy which has traditionally been based on agriculture, nowadays, many tourists go to Matera in order to visit the famous Sassi (meaning "stones "). Sassi is an ancient town, which is listed on World Heritage of UNESCO.
